Debut New Show Return to the Origin of Love: The Songs and Stories of Hedwig
With Amber Martin & Very Special Guests
December 29-31, 2021 @ The Town Hall, NYC
Following 2019’s sold-out, unforgettable three-night engagement at The Town Hall in New York City (and several postponements in 2020) Hedwig and the Angry Inch co-creators John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask are returning with a re-fab’d rock spectacle Return to the Origin of Love: The Songs and Stories of Hedwig, premiering December 29-31, 2021 at The Town Hall.
The show will bring very special co-star Amber Martin, Hedwig’s Broadway band Tits of Clay, special guests, new songs, and revamped projections from designers Cho Su-Hyun and Michael Zumbrun. “Hed-heads” will be together again, back to the Origin to celebrate one of alt-culture’s most beloved and enduring creations.
Tickets go on sale July 13 at 12pm EST through Ticketmaster or The Town Hall box office.
VIP level tickets featuring a post-show meet and greet with Mitchell and Trask (December 29) or gift bag of rare collectible items (December 30-31) will be sold from premiere seating, with proceeds benefiting a number of extraordinary organizations working across the LGBTQIA community, including:
Chosen Family Law Center (CFLC), is creating a more inclusive NY and NJ for queer families. CFLC provides free direct legal services & advocacy for low-income LGBTQIA, non-nuclear, and polyamorous families; trans and gender non-conforming clients; and LGBTQIA asylees fleeing persecution. CFLC also teaches lawyers, therapists, and other professionals how to support these communities with dignity.
Burritos Not Bombs!, a mutual aid food distribution program in Mexico City which began in April 2020 to battle hunger during the COVID-19 crisis, proving how food assistance empowers communities and strengthens economies during the pandemic.
Following sold-out engagements across the US, Australia, Japan and South Korea and a major European tour planned for the Spring, the double Tony Award-winning, Golden Globe-nominated Mitchell will also share songs from his acclaimed recent albums New American Dream, Pt. 1 and Turning Time Around, ‘musical podcast’ Anthem: Homunculus (“little man” in Latin), a 10-episode series with over 30 new songs, starring himself, Glenn Close, Patti Lupone, Cynthia Erivo, Denis O'Hare, Laurie Anderson, and Marion Cotillard. Read more about the series here at The New York Times and Vanity Fair.
“It's been very rejuvenating to be reliving the 25-year history of Hedwig and its creation with Stephen Trask,” says Mitchell. “These shows were born from necessity, to help pay down my Mom's health care, but have ended up as a glorious re-bonding with our fans and a celebration of how Hedwig has changed all our lives. Following her passing this year, I can’t wait to celebrate her memory and all that we loved and lost in this crazy time and bring more benefit to a few of our favorite charities.”
“...the central message of Hedwig is never lost,” says KQED, following a recent performance in San Francisco. “The clarion call to “the misfits and the losers” to “lift up your hands” and become whole may sound simplistic on paper. But in a room full of friends and strangers, hands lifted in communal celebration, a pulsing wave of music and light washing over the crowd as Hedwig relinquishes the stage to the long-suffering Yitzhak—dressed to kill in scarlet ruffles and a brunette bouffant—it is the only truth that makes sense in the moment.”
So put on some make-up, turn up the eight-track and pull the wig down from the shelf – for a night of post-punk, neo-glam rock – a collective quest for love, hope and identity.
