Our Asylee Assistance Project supports LGBTQIA clients who are fleeing state-sanctioned violence and oppression in other countries and have already been granted asylum, but need assistance with the extensive Adjustment of Status paperwork in order to obtain a Green Card. Most legal services programs that provide asylum petition assistance fail to offer this service as well, leaving a gap in crucial legal services that leaves asylees vulnerable to deportation.
We also offer these clients the support of the Trans Umbrella Project and Parenting Protection Project if they are LGBTQ+, so that in addition to gaining asylum, they get this support to further their safety and security as they restart their life.
Asylee clients are eligible for support from CFLC in getting their Green Card if they have already been granted asylum for being an LGBTQ+ refugee and have been living in the U.S. for at least one full year since asylum was granted.
One thing you can do NOW is take practical steps to get all of your legal documents in order to protect yourself and your people as much as possible.
